Today I am going to speak about such an important thing in business as small talk. It's SO CULTURAL! I mean it's very different in different cultures. As an example, let's have a look at Chinese business practice:
The importance of developing and maintaining relationships in China is enormous. This is especially important in contacts with foreign partners. At the beginning of a relationship, the conversation will revolve mainly around business or professional topics.
As you progress, topics will change and include questions about family, religion, income, and career opportunities within the company. These questions are not considered "awkward", the Chinese simply want to get to know you better.
If you are asked a question you would rather not want to answer, just tell your Chinese partner that you do not have an answer to that question. It is normal to receive such a response.
The Chinese use very limited body language when speaking and are somewhat suspicious of anyone gesturing too much, thus showing too many emotions.
Formality, modesty, and simplicity are the words you should use when building a relationship with Chinese partners.
